What do you think of when you hear “Accounting Club"?
"Do you imagine people with horn rimmed glasses and pocket protectors, pens behind their ears and calculators in their palms? What exactly would they be doing? Maybe you’d imagine them sitting around a table, trying to make a trial balance sheet balance correctly and debating over debits and credits, or maybe you’d imagine them filling out tax forms.
You could not be more wrong.
The Accounting Club at Texas State is so much more than that. While every so often, we do find a small satisfaction in making figures balance, it is mainly a channel for students and professionals to network in. We have professionals come in each meeting to try and convince us to work for them. We travel to different cities to visit accounting offices and to go on tours of their space. We have social-, yes, social events, such as the golf tournament, Meet the Firms, and various dinners.
More than anything, our main focus is to reassure accounting majors that they chose the right career path. Accounting is not always easy, and it’s our job to make sure that students are confident in not only their skills on paper, but also with their skills as people. We strive to help members make the transition from student to professional. And if introducing students to a system of networking with professionals hasn’t convinced them, well… we would hope that at least the pizza at the end of our meetings would."
